The “Yearning & Other Dangerous Acts” series is a devotional to desire & nature. Each piece begins with a longing so deep it fractures reality, letting the mythic leak through.
In ten parts, I float down the river of yearning: I Just Wanna Eat the Sun, I Just Wanna See the Air, I Just Wanna Kiss the Moon, I Just Wanna Touch the Earth, I Just Wanna Drink the Sea, I Just Wanna Steal the Stars, I Just Wanna Braid the River’s Hair, I Just Wanna Bury My Heart in the Garden, I Just Wanna Howl at the Moon with the Wolves, I Just Wanna Set the Sky on Fire.
Receive these poems as acts of becoming. Of setting yourself aflame in order to know what it means to burn, and still bloom.
Welcome to the yearning. Step in barefoot, read it loud, scream if you need to.
Above all, want freely.
i just wanna drink the sea.
she tastes like childhood memories and fish.
i just wanna drink the sea.
i wanna be full of endlessness.
i wanna see beyond the horizon.
i wanna hug the sunset every night.
i wanna kiss the sunrise at dusk.
i just wanna drink the sea.
i wanna be the color blue.
i want my tears to become a ship.
i just wanna drink the sea.
i wanna travel the globe and slip into the sky.
i want her to become me,
one wave,
one day at a time.
i just wanna drink the sea.
i bet that’s what it feels like to be free.
i wanna bang my hands against the rocks,
make art out of foam,
sculpt shells in the image of a goddess
that greets me every time i rage.
i want eagles to rest in my arms.
i just wanna drink the sea,
so that for once,
she’ll know what it feels like
to travel through someone safely.
i want mermaids to live inside me.
i want my heart to become the great blue whale
i know she is,
i want her to swim,
to dive deep.
i just wanna drink the sea.
i wanna throw up lakes and rivers.
i wanna hang from the sky
in droplets when it rains.
i just wanna drink the sea.
oh, what an amazing journey that would be.
sometimes i don't know what reading your poetry will evoke, this time I have a lot to say lol
That last line reminds me of Odysseus, the mermaids too -- traversing uncharted territory "she'll know what it feels like to travel through someone safely" - the metaphor runs deep with this one. Really makes me think of migration, how many people have crossed this world.
I also noticed that there's this running thread (a connection) of wanting freedom or being free in some of your poems
With the air, the earth, and now the sea
It’s almost like harnessing these uncontrollable entities (vs the moon / sun which are in stasis) and out of reach, we interact with these bodies almost on a daily basis (especially if you live literally next to a beach or the coast.) I've heard time and again that living near the beach is so different and I see it whenever we head out there, the vibe is different, the culture, clothes are more relaxed, chilled out.
i just wanna drink the sea.
she tastes like childhood memories and fish. - my fave line!
I love this one ☝🏻 one of my favs xx
